Bon Secours St. Francis Health System has announced its now using the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution, a technology that helps surgeons perform a knee replacement with the use of data that’s tailored to each patient’s anatomy.
Nearly a million knee replacements are performed annually in the United States, with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons predicting that to rise to around 3.5 million procedures per year by 2030. Patients are often looking for treatment options that will help them get back to life faster.
Bon Secours St. Francis shares that goal and is now utilizing the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution which consists of a robotic-assisted device, a high-speed camera, optical trackers and data screens. Together, they help the surgeon gather necessary data about a patient’s anatomy to achieve a higher level of precision than normally possible. This can help increase stability and reduce pain, providing better range of motion and preventing the unstable feeling some patients experience during everyday activities, such as bending and walking up and down stairs.
“Sometimes, even if surgery goes well, a patient may still complain of pain in their new knee. This new technology allows us to better achieve soft tissue balance around the knee, which should translate into less pain and a better overall outcome for the patient,” explained Dr. Stephen Ridgeway, an orthopedic surgeon with Bon Secours Piedmont Orthopedics.
Unlike other systems, the VELYS™ platform is completely imageless and does not require patients to go through the expense and radiation exposure of a pre-operative CT scan.
