The 126 acre Cherrydale area on the edge of the city boundaries has petitioned to be annexed into the city limits. The request from business and property owners in the Cherrydale area includes 96.122 acres of real property and a 30-acre of right-of-way.
The request also surpasses the requirement of having 75% of property owners who own at least 75% of the assessed value of the area to sign the request for annexation.
The planning and zoning commission considered the request at their Feb. 1 meeting. The petition for annexation requires a public hearing and two readings by the City Council before it can be confirmed or denied. The joint first reading and public hearing is scheduled for Feb. 12, while the second and final reading will be on Feb. 26.
If the annexation were to be granted, Cherrydale business and property owners will see decreases in property taxes and water rates. They will also be served by the city of Greenville police and fire services.
Greenville is located in upstate South Carolina at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The city has a population of roughly 72,000 and is known as the entertainment hub of the region. The current Mayor is Knox White, who presides over the six member city council.
