South Carolina Congressman William Timmons posted a series of statements on August 11, 2025, criticizing the state of Washington, D.C., and supporting recent actions by President Trump regarding federal oversight of the city’s police force.

In his first post, Timmons wrote, “A nation’s capital in decline is a nation in decline.

MAKE D.C. SAFE AND BEAUTIFUL AGAIN! ” (August 11, 2025).

Shortly after, he asserted that crime in Washington had surpassed that of other major cities: “Under Democrat control, our nation’s capital has become more dangerous than Bogotá and Mexico City. President Trump is bringing law and order back to Washington.” (August 11, 2025).

Later the same day, Timmons referenced an announcement from President Trump: ” President Trump announced he is invoking the D.C. Home Rule Act to place the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control and deploy the National Guard!

President Trump is taking back our capital for the American people. ” (August 11, 2025).

William Timmons currently serves as a U.S. Congressman representing South Carolina’s 4th district since replacing Trey Gowdy in 2019. He previously served in the South Carolina Senate from 2016 to 2018 and holds degrees from George Washington University and the University of South Carolina. Born in Greenville in 1984, Timmons continues to reside there.

The D.C. Home Rule Act grants Congress authority over local governance matters in Washington, D.C., including police oversight under certain circumstances.
