U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham announced that the Department of Homeland Security has approved more than $200 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reimbursement grants for South Carolina. The funding will help cover costs related to recent natural disasters, including Hurricanes Ian, Florence, and Helene.
Over the last eight years, these storms have caused significant damage across the state. Many homes were destroyed, thousands of power lines were downed, and lives were lost as a result of these severe weather events. In response, Governor Henry McMaster submitted requests for federal disaster assistance.
Spartanburg County is set to receive over $9.5 million in FEMA reimbursement grants following extensive damage from Hurricane Helene. Additionally, the South Carolina Department of Transportation will get approximately $75 million, while the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina are allocated about $94 million for their roles in storm response efforts.
Senator Graham expressed appreciation for federal support: “I applaud the Trump Administration and Secretary Noem for approving more than $200 million in FEMA grants to reimburse South Carolina for its efforts to recover from natural disasters over the past few years. When Hurricane Helene swept through the Palmetto State, it destroyed entire communities, many of which are still rebuilding. These approved funds will reimburse state agencies and other South Carolina organizations that have helped families get back on their feet quicker and made communities whole again,” said Graham. “To Governor McMaster, thank you for your leadership during these crises and for ensuring these grant applications received the consideration they deserved. To President Trump, thank you for remembering South Carolina and sending help when our people needed it the most.”
