Furman’s Lillie Murphy has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for matches played from March 17 to March 23, according to an announcement made by the conference on Tuesday. The award is selected by the league office.
Murphy earned this recognition after posting a perfect record last week, going 2-0 in both singles and doubles matches. In Furman’s 6-0 victory at Western Carolina on March 19, Murphy competed at the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles, defeating Mariya Dobreva with scores of 6-2, 6-1 and partnering with Elle Warren for a doubles win of 6-2. Later in the week against UNCG on March 21, she secured a singles win at No. 2 with scores of 6-0, 6-1 as Furman won that match-up by a score of 7-0. Murphy and Warren—currently ranked No.31 nationally in doubles—also recorded a doubles victory against UNCG with a scoreline of 6-3.
This marks Murphy’s third time receiving the weekly honor this season; she was previously recognized on January 20 and March 10.
Other nominees for this week’s award included Mariangel Estrella (ETSU), Sofiya Tsitavets (Mercer), Lauren Thomson (UNCG), and Jordan Fenton (Chattanooga).
Furman is scheduled to travel to Mercer later today before returning home to face Samford on March 29.
