The Furman women’s golf team will participate in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional at Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, from May 11 to May 13, according to an April 29 announcement by the NCAA Division I Golf Committee.
The event is important as it offers teams a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championship. Furman is seeded tenth out of twelve teams competing for one of five available spots in the national championship, which will be held from May 22 to May 27 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. The regional includes four teams ranked among the top twenty-five nationally: Texas (fifth), North Carolina (twelfth), Mississippi State (seventeenth), and Oklahoma State (twentieth).
Furman earned its place by winning its twenty-second Southern Conference Championship last week at Columbia Country Club in Blythewood, South Carolina. This marks Furman’s twenty-sixth appearance at an NCAA Regional and continues a strong tradition that saw seventeen consecutive regional appearances from 1993 through 2010.
Last season, Furman finished ninth at the NCAA Normal Regional. Audrey Ryu placed seventh individually and qualified for the national championship round where she tied for forty-seventh place. The lineup this year includes Ryu along with sophomores Jenna Madden and Eva Ringwald, freshmen Ava Hanneman and Olivia Hasselbach, with Andrea Marin Raga traveling as an alternate.
The full field for the Chapel Hill Regional consists of Texas; North Carolina; Mississippi State; Oklahoma State; Kent State; Virginia; Michigan State; NC State; High Point; Furman; Richmond; and Howard. Six individuals were also named as participants based on their performances during conference play.
