Furman University defeated Wofford College 5-3 in Southern Conference softball action on April 25, clinching the best-of-three series at Pepsi Stadium.

The game was significant as it marked Senior Day for Furman and secured their second conference series win of the season. Back-to-back home runs by Sylvia Burroughs and Kristyn Embler in the fifth inning gave Furman a decisive lead.

With Furman ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Embler hit a home run to right-center field. Burroughs followed with another homer to left-center, extending the Paladins’ advantage to 5-2. In relief pitching, Embler managed through trouble in the seventh before freshman Gwen Hill entered from the bullpen and recorded her first career save by retiring Kaytlin Greenwood for the final out.

Jamison Noonan started for Furman, pitching four and one-third innings while allowing one earned run and earning her fourth win of the season. Embler pitched two and one-third innings in relief before Hill closed out the game. Offensively, both Embler and Burroughs went two-for-three with a home run each. Rachel Hawkins contributed a double while Katie Peeler and Kate Stoltzfus added runs batted in.

Wofford’s Abby Greenwood took the loss after allowing two runs over two innings. Rivers Sampson had two hits for Wofford, while Desirae Devine reached base three times with a hit and two walks.

Looking ahead, Furman is set to play its non-conference finale against Georgia Tech on Tuesday evening in Atlanta before concluding its regular season next weekend at Chattanooga.
