Furman women’s lacrosse falls to No. 8 Clemson in season opener

Alexa Spallina scored 10 points to lead the eighth-ranked Clemson Tigers to an 18-1 win over Furman University in the Paladins’ season opener on Tuesday at the Clemson Lacrosse Complex.

Clemson now holds a 2-0 record for the season, while Furman starts at 0-1.

Spallina was one of seven Clemson players to score during the game, recording six goals and four assists. Regan Byrne added four goals, and Emma Penczek scored three. Marleigh O’Day contributed three assists. Goalkeepers Tessa DeLuca, Gigi Adamson, and Ava DeLyra combined for five saves.

For Furman, preseason All-Big South selection Lily Toole scored her team’s only goal in the first quarter—her first of the season and 65th career goal—which reduced Clemson’s early lead to 3-1. Zoe Milmoe, Shae Insinga, and Sailor Henderson each collected two ground balls. Insinga and Caroline Smith both won one draw control apiece. Rachel Sbei and fellow preseason All-Big South pick Skylar Hilmar each forced a turnover. In goal, Henderson made eight saves.

After Furman’s goal in the first quarter, its defense held Clemson scoreless for ten minutes by forcing five turnovers before Clemson closed out with fifteen unanswered goals.

Furman finished with nine ground balls and eight shots overall.

The Paladins will play their home opener against Austin Peay at Paladin Stadium on Friday, February 20 at 6 p.m.
