The Furman women’s tennis team has reached 67th place in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I national poll. This marks an improvement from last week’s ranking of 75th, following a 4-2 victory over Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). The Paladins, currently leading the Southern Conference with a 5-3 record, secured the win by taking the doubles point and earning singles victories at flights two, four, and six.
Two doubles teams from Furman have also been recognized in the national rankings. Freshmen Lillie Murphy and Elle Warren are ranked 34th with a 9-3 record. “Murphy and Warren won the Southern Conference Fall Championship then finished third at the ITA Masters Championship to qualify for the national championship. The Furman duo recorded key wins over Pepperdine, Delaware, Ball State, and Wichita State in fall competition,” according to the university.
Another pairing, freshmen Sasha Dimitrov and Murphy, holds the 63rd spot nationally with a 6-4 record. “The Paladin duo went 4-2 in the fall with victories over Kentucky and Mississippi State at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic then beat Old Dominion and Notre Dame at Clemson’s Duckworth Duels. Dimitrov and Murphy topped Iowa, 6-1, at flight one to open the spring season,” as stated in team information.
Furman’s next match is scheduled against Toledo on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Fort Myers, Florida.
