Furman University’s women’s tennis team defeated Wake Forest 4-0 on Friday night at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, South Carolina.

The Paladins secured the doubles point with wins at flights two and three. Freshmen Bianca Ceroni and Elle Warren beat Krystal Blanch and Evie Oxford 6-3 at flight two. At number three, junior Macy Hitchcock and freshman Molly Robinson won 6-2 against Sankavi Gownder and Jingyi Li. The match at flight one was unfinished, with Wake Forest’s Nevena Carton and Kady Tannenbaum leading Furman’s Sasha Dimitrov and Lillie Murphy 4-3.

In singles play, Lillie Murphy quickly defeated Blanch 6-2, 6-2 at flight two. Hitchcock followed with a win over Tannenbaum 6-0, 7-6(7) at number three. Warren clinched the overall victory for Furman by beating Carlton 7-6(5), 6-3 in the top-seeded singles contest.

Matches at flights four and five were left unfinished. At flight four, Dimitrov split sets with Heidi Bulger—Bulger won the first set 6-4 while Dimitrov took the second set 6-3; they were tied at one game each in the third set when play stopped. Ceroni led Oxford 4-2 in the first set of number five when that match was halted.

“This was a gutsy performance from a young, feisty team,” said Furman head coach Michelle Dasso following the win. “The maturity and composure the team showed against a very strong, experienced program is promising. We will need to stay disciplined and be ready to battle a well coached Davidson program on Tuesday.”

Furman improved its season record to 3-1 with this result. Wake Forest fell to a record of 1-2 after this loss.

The Paladins are scheduled to host Davidson next Tuesday at 3 p.m.
