Greenville County high schools outperformed the state in all subject areas on the End of Course Exam Program (EOCEP) assessment, showed notable gains from spring 2021 to spring 2022, and made strong progress in returning to or exceeding the levels they were at before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Algebra 1
- 93% of high schools showed increases from 2020-21 to 2021-22 school year.
- 79% of high schools exceeded their pre-pandemic (2018-19) test scores.
English 2
- 50% of high schools showed increases from 2020-21 to 2021-22 school year.
- There is no pre-pandemic (2018-19) comparative data for English 2 because the English 1 test was given in 2019 before switching to English 2.
Biology
- 64% of high schools showed increases from 2020-21 to 2021-22 school year.
- While GCS exceeded the state average in Biology and there were notable gains from 2020-21 to 2021-22, GCS remains focused on helping the high schools exceed their pre-pandemic (2018-19) Biology test scores.
U.S. History
- Due to the state-wide change in standards taught and tested for U.S. History, there is no comparative data from 2020-21 to 2021-22 nor to pre-pandemic data (2018-19). For the 2022 baseline year, GCS students outperformed the state in U.S. History by 9 percentage points.

“We are very pleased that we continue to see gains at the high school level on the End of Course exams,” said GCS Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster. “This data highlights the areas where we have much to celebrate as well as where we need to focus on continued improvement as we make strong progress toward exceeding pre-pandemic levels of academic achievement within all of our schools.”
Some important notes:
- Fountain Inn High School opened in fall of 2021 so the school’s scores are not factored into year-over-year or pre-pandemic comparative data sets.
- The South Carolina Department of Education released assessment data for elementary and middle schools on September 6. At that time, Greenville County Schools celebrated the tremendous academic gains and shared that data, which is available below for reference.
