Senator Lindsey Graham, representing South Carolina, made several public statements on September 19, 2025, addressing topics ranging from government shutdowns to international sanctions and local recognition.
In a post on his social media account dated September 19, 2025, Graham commented on the potential for a government shutdown. He wrote: “Shutting the government down doesn’t serve a very good purpose for either party, let alone the American people. It’s more likely a 600 lb. man passes up a donut than the Democrats vote to shut the government down. They love big government–like a 600 lb. man loves a donut.”
Later that day, Graham expressed support for actions taken by President Trump’s United Nations team regarding Iran sanctions. On September 19, 2025, he stated: “I applaud President Trump’s UN team and our allies for their efforts to allow Iran sanctions to snap back into place due to Iran’s misdeeds. This was a very necessary action. The sooner Iran knows the world is serious about stopping their nuclear ambitions, the better for us”.
In another message posted on September 19, 2025, Graham recognized two South Carolinians for their work in adoption advocacy: “Congratulations to Bill and Emily Wireman of Duncan, South Carolina on being recognized as Angels in Adoption Honorees this year. Bill and Emily truly represent the very best of our state, having spent over 15 years selflessly opening their home and hearts to more than 70 South”.
Government shutdowns have historically led to interruptions in federal services and have had significant impacts on public employees and agencies. The debate around such shutdowns often centers on disagreements between political parties over budget priorities.
The “snapback” mechanism referenced by Graham allows for previously lifted international sanctions against Iran to be reinstated if certain conditions are violated—a process rooted in past agreements intended to curb Iran’s nuclear program.
The Angels in Adoption program annually honors individuals or organizations that have made extraordinary contributions toward adoption or foster care across the United States.
