Lipscomb defeats Furman 14-4 at Purple & White Classic softball finale

Lipscomb scored seven runs in the first inning and went on to defeat Furman 14-4 in the final game of the Purple & White Classic held Saturday at Pepsi Softball Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina.

Elizabeth Martin led Lipscomb’s offense, finishing with three hits in four at-bats, including a double and a home run. She drove in six runs during the game. Chapel Cunningham contributed by going two-for-three with a two-run double during the opening inning. After Martin brought home two runners early, she added another RBI with a double in the second inning as Lipscomb extended its lead to 9-0.

Furman responded when Katie Peeler scored on Rachel Hawkins’ double in the bottom of the second. Both teams added one run each in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Martin hit a three-run homer as part of a four-run frame for Lipscomb, making it 14-2.

Brooke Beam earned her first win of the season for Lipscomb after pitching five innings and allowing three earned runs on nine hits. She did not issue any walks and struck out one batter.

Jamison Noonan started for Furman but was credited with the loss after giving up six runs while recording just one out.

For Furman, Eden Frederick had three hits without an out, while Peeler finished with two hits and scored twice. Kate Stoltzfus hit her second home run of the season—a two-run shot—in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Furman’s record now stands at 1-8 this season. The team will compete next weekend at the Trojan Invitational tournament in Troy, Alabama.
