Furman University’s Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship will launch a program this fall to help entrepreneurs put their ideas into action.
GVL Starts was launched in partnership with the City of Greenville, Greenville Local Development Corporation (GLDC), and the South Carolina Department of Commerce, and will assist aspiring entrepreneurs network with like-minded entrepreneurs and mentors.
“Engaging with the Greenville community is nothing new to Furman,” Anthony Herrera, Furman’s chief innovation officer, said in a City of Greenville statement. “GVL Starts is one of the many new ways we are collaborating with community partners to grow a culture of innovation and position Greenville as a national hub for entrepreneurship.”
The program will limited to 25 participants who will have the opportunity to present their business ideas for a chance to win $5,000 and free office space to help launch their business.
The eight-week program begins Aug. 17, and will be offered twice yearly. Sessions will be held 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., every Tuesday and Thursday.
Bryan Davis, program director for GVL Starts, said that more than 70% of new businesses fail within five years due to problems that can be addressed with the right foundation which the program seeks to offer to participants.
