Shenandoah Growers Inc. has broken ground on a new indoor biofarm in Anderson County that will grow affordable organic herbs and leafy green produce, the state announced.
The new, 100,000-square-foot facility at 2665 Highway 29 South, will create 50 jobs and should open by the second quarter of 2022, according to an Aug. 3 news release from Gov. Henry McMaster's office.
“This farm is part of our broader vision for a transparent, diverse and responsive food system more resilient against climate change and supply chain disruptions,” company CEO Matt Ryan said in the governor's office statement. “Looking ahead, there is tremendous opportunity to apply innovation to develop produce aligned with emerging consumer trends, from better flavor and texture to enhanced nutrient content, responsive to the burgeoning ‘food as health’ concept.”
With long-term strategic partnerships with some of the nation’s largest food retailers, including some relationships spanning more than 20 years, Virginia-based Shenandoah Growers, Inc., sells products in 20,000 stores.
“With leading unit economics, capital efficiency, market reach and product offerings, Shenandoah Growers, Inc. is poised to break a long-standing market compromise by delivering 100% USDA certified organic produce that is both affordable and widely accessible,” the governor's office release said.
