The Twin Chimneys Landfill site in Honea Path will soon be home to a new state-of-the-art renewable natural gas (RNG) site that'll help improve the dependability of the local energy system while substantially cutting back on carbon dioxide emissions.

Charlotte-based Enerdyne Power Systems is heading the project, known as the Twin Chimneys Power Producers, which is expected to be up and running by the fourth quarter of 2022, according to an announcement by LS Power and the Landfill Group.

"Our tenure in the RNG market, ability to offer price assurance through long-term fixed price, and direct connection to the transportation market mitigates risk and maximizes project returns for all," Mike Koel, president of U.S. Gain, a company that develops and distributes renewable energy, said in the release.

According to the press release, Enerdyne has already started building the renewable natural gas plant at Twin Chimneys.

Gas from the Greenville County landfill will be collected at Twin Chimneys and converted into RNG which will be directed into the local natural gas system which is owned and operated by the. Greenwood Commissioners of Public Works, the press release stated.

According to the release, the gas obtained at the landfill is a byproduct of decomposing waste.
