Fashion biotech company MycoWorks will expand operations with a new facility in Union County to keep up with industry demands while creating 400 jobs.
In a press release from Gov. Henry McMaster, MycoWorks, known for its mycelium-grown materials used as a sustainable, luxury-quality leather alternative, announced a $107 million investment in Union.
"Deciding where to lay down roots was a big decision, but the partnership offered by state and local officials in combination with access to talent and amenities in the area made it easy. We look forward to growing a world class team and operation in Union County, South Carolina," MycoWorks COO Doug Hardesty said in the release.
MycoWorks utilizes the Fine Mycelium process to produce it flagship material Reishi, which mimics the performance of animal leathers while causing less environmental damage than other synthetic leathers.
The mushroom-based material offers a unique solution and new design possibilities for fashion and luxury brands without bending under supply chain constraints, the release said.
“We are very excited to welcome MycoWorks to Union County. This project will greatly benefit the citizens of Union County through the jobs which will be created and the diversification of our industrial base within our community," Union County Supervisor Frank Hart said.
The new facility will be located at 260 Midway Drive.
