Furman University senior Sylvia Burroughs has been named to the Preseason All-Southern Conference First Team, according to a vote by the league’s head coaches. The announcement was made Thursday.
Burroughs, who is from Melbourne, Florida, received all-league honors last season as a designated player/utility (non-pitcher). She finished the previous season with a .324 batting average, recorded 14 doubles, and led Furman in home runs (6), runs batted in (29), slugging percentage (.541), and walks (28). Burroughs played multiple positions including catcher, designated player, and rightfielder. In addition to her athletic achievements, she is a computer science major and was selected for the 2025 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
The Furman Paladins are predicted to finish eighth in the Southern Conference this year after ending last season with a 15-38 overall record and a 5-16 mark in conference play. The team will begin its 2026 campaign under new head coach Mary Beth Dennison. Their first games are scheduled against Tarleton State and Gardner-Webb at the Runnin’ Bulldogs Classic in Boiling Springs, North Carolina on February 6.
Other preseason honors include Olivia Shaw of Samford being named Preseason Player of the Year and Margaret Axelson of Wofford as Preseason Pitcher of the Year. UNCG received four first-place votes and leads the preseason poll with 43 points.
