Troy University’s softball team defeated Furman University 12-4 in the final game of the Trojan Invitational, held Sunday at the Troy Softball Complex. The game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.
Troy’s offense was led by McKinnon Howard and Makaley Boswell, who together went 6-for-7 at the plate. Boswell drove in six runs and hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give Troy an early lead. After Furman’s Katie Peeler and Ansley Chiang each batted in a run to tie the score at 2-2 in the second inning, Kalee Rochinski restored Troy’s lead with a solo home run. Howard and Boswell then extended Troy’s advantage to 5-2.
Kamryn Munson added another home run for Troy at the start of the third inning. Additional RBI singles from Howard and Boswell contributed to a four-run third inning, pushing Troy ahead 9-2.
Furman’s Kristyn Embler hit her first career home run, a two-run shot in the fifth inning. However, Boswell responded with a double that drove in two more runs for Troy, followed by Dailyn Motes’ RBI single that ended the game via mercy rule.
Boswell finished with three hits including a double and a homer, while Howard also had three hits and scored four times. Emma Banks earned her second win of the season by pitching two shutout innings in relief for Troy.
