Congressman William Timmons, representing South Carolina’s 4th district, has been vocal on social media regarding recent developments in U.S. education policy. Timmons, who succeeded Trey Gowdy in Congress in 2019 and previously served in the South Carolina Senate, expressed his views through a series of tweets concerning an Executive Order signed by President Trump.
On March 20, 2025, Congressman Timmons tweeted about the signing of an Executive Order by President Trump aimed at empowering parents, states, and communities to enhance educational outcomes. He noted that this order “Directs the Secretary of Education to take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education.”
In another tweet on the same day, Timmons criticized the Biden Administration for its handling of education grants. He claimed that more than $1 billion was wasted on promoting radical ideologies. According to him, under Trump’s administration “Taxpayers will no longer be burdened with progressive social experiments and obsolete” policies.
Further emphasizing his stance on educational reform, Timmons pointed out that since its inception in 1979, the Department of Education has spent over $3 trillion without improving student achievement as measured by standardized National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores. He highlighted this inefficiency in a tweet stating “the Department of Education…has spent over $3 trillion without improving student achievement as measured by standardized National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores.”
