The Greenville Symphony Orchestra will perform this weekend, featuring pieces from Mendelssohn and Sibelius, as well as one piece by a young female composer, Clarice Assad.
The orchestra will be conducted by John Young Shik Concklin and will be held at the Peace Center at 300 South Main Street in Greenville on Saturday, Jan. 22, and Sunday, Jan. 23. The Saturday concert will take place at 8 p.m. while the Sunday performance will be at 3 p.m., according to the orchestra's website.
“'Suite for Lower Strings' (2009) is a five-movement fantasy on well-known themes by J.S. Bach," Assad said in the program notes from her piece. "The work emphasizes the string section’s lower voices, such as the viola, cello and bass. Typically in baroque music, the melody was given to the higher instruments — but the suite, commissioned by the New Century Chamber Orchestra, was specifically tasked to showcase the often underused lower instruments. Each of the suite’s short movements presents Bach’s popular and recognizable melodies, often varying and combining them with elements from 20th-century styles."
According to the concert's official program, the orchestra is set to perform the following: "Suite for Low Strings" by Assad, "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" by Mendelssohn, and "Symphony No. 3" by Sibelius.
Tickets start at $19 each and can be purchased at the concert hall box office Monday through Friday, from 10. am. to 1 p.m., online through the Peace Center website or by phone at 864-467-3000 between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Discounted student tickets are available for purchase on Friday evenings for Chamber concerts and Saturday and Sunday evenings for Masterworks concerts with proof of valid ID required at the Peace Center box office.
A Grammy-nominated composer with over 70 works to her credit, Clarice Assad’s numerous pieces include works for Carnegie Hall, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Boston Youth Orchestra, the La Jolla Music Festival and many others.
