Congressman William Timmons, alongside Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott, and Congress members Ralph Norman and Sheri Biggs, have filed a bicameral amicus brief in the Medina v. Planned Parenthood case. This legal document supports South Carolina's stance that Planned Parenthood should not qualify for Medicaid funding.
"States should have the authority to decide which providers are eligible to receive Medicaid funds," Congressman Timmons stated. He emphasized that South Carolina has the right to set its own policies to ensure taxpayer dollars do not go to abortion providers like Planned Parenthood. "This case is about protecting life and upholding state sovereignty against federal overreach," he added.
The core of this case revolves around South Carolina's 2018 decision declaring abortion clinics, including Planned Parenthood, ineligible for Medicaid funding. This decision is now being legally challenged, making Medina v. Planned Parenthood significant in affirming state control over Medicaid provider qualifications.
"This case is about protecting states’ rights and ensuring that taxpayer dollars are allocated in a manner that reflects the will of the people," Timmons continued. He expressed pride in supporting South Carolina's right to make such decisions.
The amicus brief calls on courts to uphold South Carolina’s determination and reinforce state authority over Medicaid provider qualifications. Congressman Timmons remains dedicated to defending life and ensuring that South Carolina can make decisions without undue federal interference.
