Spartanburg County Council is considering a rezoning of North Town Drive from a “local road” to a “collector road.”

In a recent release from the county, officials outlined the plan for the reclassification of the road in the Partial Restriction District.

"The Spartanburg County Council is considering the reclassification of North Town Drive, in the Partial Restriction District, from a Local Road to a Collector Road,” the release said.

The county’s planning commission is set to hold a public hearing on the rezoning at 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 in the County Council Chambers at 366 North Church St. in Spartanburg, the release said.

In the weeks following, the county council will hold a separate public hearing on the rezoning plans at 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 21 in the County Council Chambers.

This comes as the release states the volume of traffic on North Town Drive made the council consider reclassifying the road from a Local to a Collector.

According to the county website, Spartanburg County currently operates under two zoning ordinances — the Performance Zoning Ordinance in the Southwest Planning Area and the Unified Land Management Ordinance in the remainder of the county.

Of these, neither ordinance assigns zoning classifications at the parcel level as most traditional zoning ordinances do, according to the website.
