To keep pace with a growing population that puts more pressure on roadways, the City outlined its new Intelligent Traffic System.

During a work session on Monday, Engineering Services director Clint Link presented City Council with the City’s plans to keep traffic moving efficiently on major corridors, preventing drivers from detouring into neighborhoods and producing a safer trip for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

Funded with $8 million from the Neighborhood Infrastructure Bond (NIB), Link outlined projects that include:

• Improved traffic flow on corridors to prevent neighborhood cut-through traffic
• Additional school zone signage and protections in school zones
• Illuminated street signs for better visibility
• Real-time traffic monitoring to reduce rush-hour congestion and study traffic patterns
• Uninterruptable traffic signals for use during power outages
• Traffic pre-emption to assist emergency vehicles

To coordinate the traffic control effort, a new Traffic Management Center is now under construction at the City’s Public Safety Complex on Halton Road. The Center will serve as the control room for traffic management, allowing engineers to make signal adjustments in real time and provide emergency alerts to the public.
