At a final height of 125 feet over Greenville, the foundational pieces of the Thomas and Vivian A. Wong Honor Tower have arrived on site at Unity Park.

Two 60-foot inner steel sections weighing 37.5 tons rolled in on trucks from SC Steel in Taylors. Two cranes were used to stack and stabilize the cores while welders solidified the connections. Once complete, crews will begin roughing in the walls of the structure.

The public can watch the tower take shape over the coming year until its targeted opening date in the summer of 2025. The best viewing location is from Auro Bridge in Unity Park.

Here’s what’s next on the construction schedule:

Early Fall 2024 – Framing and elevator work, along with utility installation

Late Fall 2024 – Observation deck framing, temporary roof, stairs, rain screens, and the outer core

Winter 2025 – Elevator and lighting

Spring 2025 – Observation deck finish work and plaza

Tower Facts:

When complete, the tower will weigh 125 tons.

Pilings to support the tower are driven 50 feet into the ground.

There will be 176 stainless steel stairs leading to the top.

Nearly three miles of extruded anodized aluminum will be used to construct the slats on the outer skin.

The elevator will have a glass front and rear wall so that visitors can experience the tower's interior whether walking or riding to the observation deck.
